The software

What is Payload CMS?

Payload CMS is a content management system (CMS). It’s your site’s admin panel: where you edit text, images, articles, and pages. It’s open-source software, free under the MIT license. The team behind it joined Figma in June 2025.

Payload is a headless CMS: it separates content management from site display. In practice, we freely develop the design in code, while your content remains editable from the admin panel. This is what allows for a truly custom site and an autonomous team day-to-day.

For your technical teams. Payload 3 is written in TypeScript and integrates directly into your Next.js app: a single project to develop, host, and maintain. The content model is defined in code, so it’s versioned, tested, and tailored to your business. Content is stored in your own database.

In the admin panel, you manage:

  • pages, built from sections designed for your site;
  • blog posts, news, and projects;
  • images and documents;
  • translations;
  • the title and description of each page in Google;
  • users and their access rights;
  • drafts, preview before publishing, and version history.
Payload CMS is used by
  • Microsoft
  • Accenture
  • ASICS

Payload is part of Figma, which supports its open-source development.

Custom-built

A site tailored to your needs

Design

We develop the site exactly as per the mockups—yours or ours—including unconventional layouts and animations.

Custom features

Forms, calculators, integrations with your business tools: we build the features you need.

Autonomy

You update text and images and create pages yourself, without touching the code. Design changes, however, require code.

Future changes

The site is entirely yours. You choose who develops it further: Scroll, your team, or another provider.

Site administration

Update your content yourself

Payload is your site’s admin panel. Here, you update text and images, publish a blog post, or add a project. We tailor fields and access rights to your team’s needs.

  1. Edit textChange a title, sentence, or image: the preview updates instantly.
  2. Create new pages tooAssemble the sections designed for your site in any order you choose.
  3. Review before publishingSave a draft and open the preview to see the result before going live.
AI page generator

Create your pages with a single sentence using Scroll’s AI Builder

Describe the page you need. Scroll’s AI Builder creates it with tailored text for your business and suggested images.

It reuses elements already on your site.

It assembles sections designed for your site during development, respecting your design.

Review, adjust and publish.

The page is created as a draft. You can edit text, images and sections before going live.

Independence and follow-up

A site that remains yours

You retain full control of your site

You own everything: the code, content, images, and access. If you ever switch providers, they can take over the site as-is and keep developing it.

Payload CMS is open-source software, with no mandatory subscription, and you choose the host, in France if you prefer.

We stay by your side

After launch, we remain available. Maintenance, technical updates, and further development: new features, new sections, new design.

Changing the design itself (colors, layouts) or creating a new section type requires code: we handle it for you, or with your team.

The right choice

Is Payload CMS right for you?

Payload is a good fit if…

  • your design is out of the ordinary: layouts, animations, strong identity;
  • you need specific features: simulator, directory, client area, connection to your business tools;
  • multiple people publish content, with different permissions;
  • your site exists in multiple languages;
  • you want to retain ownership of your site and choose your host;
  • you want to create pages quickly, with AI assistance.

Another tool may be better if…

  • you need a small site, online in a few days;
  • you want to modify the design yourself in a visual editor;
  • your needs change little and an all-in-one tool suits you;
  • you no longer wish to rely on a technical provider after launch.

In these cases, Webflow may be a better fit. We also offer it: our Webflow agency.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Payload CMS

Yes. Payload CMS is open-source software released under the MIT license: there are no mandatory licenses or subscriptions to pay. The cost of a Payload site covers its development, hosting, and, if desired, maintenance and updates.

Payload is developed by the Payload team, which joined Figma in June 2025. Figma supports its open-source development. The software is used by companies like Microsoft, Accenture, and ASICS. Your site is not tied to a subscription: it stays with your chosen hosting provider, and other developers can take it over.

No. Everything related to your content is done without code, in the site’s admin panel: you edit text and images, publish articles, and create pages from your site’s sections, with drafts and previews. Code is only needed to change the site itself: its design, a new section type, or a new feature. We handle it, or your technical team does.

Webflow remains relevant if your needs change little, if you want to modify the design yourself in its visual editor, or if you prefer an all-in-one tool. A custom site with Payload offers more freedom for unique designs, animations, and features, a tailored admin for your team, and hosting flexibility. With Webflow, the code is exportable, but the CMS remains tied to the platform. We build sites with both.

WordPress suits a classic editorial site, with a trained team and needs covered by its plugins, each requiring updates and monitoring. Payload is better for a custom site: an admin designed for your content, without plugin bloat, and a site built with Next.js.

Both are open-source headless CMS built with JavaScript. Strapi runs as a separate app from your site. Payload integrates directly into your Next.js application: one project to develop, host, and maintain. For a bespoke Next.js site, this is why we prefer Payload.

Yes, if the site is well designed. Payload lets you define, for each page, the title and description displayed in Google, the page URL, image alt texts, and structured data. The outcome then depends on site speed, page structure, and content quality. We also ensure your content is well understood by AI search engines, such as ChatGPT or Google’s AI responses.

Yes. Payload can be installed with the host of your choice, including in France. Your content is stored in your own database, not on a third-party platform. We help you select the right hosting for your site.

Yes, using the Scroll AI Builder. Describe the page you need in a single sentence. It generates a draft with tailored text for your business and suggested images, based on the sections designed for your site. You review, adjust, then publish.

The site is yours. You own the code, content, images, and access. Another provider, or your own team, can take over the site as is and keep developing it.
