A useful nuance accompanies that definition, and it prevents a lot of disappointment: no-code removes syntax, not design. Modelling data, deciding who is allowed to see what, anticipating what happens when two people edit the same record remain open questions, identical to those in traditional development. What no-code saves is the time spent on plumbing, server configuration, deployment, dependencies, not the thinking about the logic.

What is the Bubble no-code tool?

With the Bubble no-code app builder, users can easily design and develop web applications. The tool allows users to create apps without having to learn to code or write a single line of code.

A group of businessmen and engineers dissatisfied with the conventional web development process launched Bubble in 2012. Their goal was to develop a platform that enables users to create websites without knowing how to code.

Like many no-code platforms, Bubble operates using a visual interface. Thanks to a drag-and-drop method, designing an app on Bubble is simpler than coding.

Behind that visual interface sits a setting that decides the application’s security, and it is not visible on screen. Access control to data runs through privacy rules, enforced server-side, data type by data type: a type created without a rule is readable by everyone, including through the app’s API. Hiding an element in the editor therefore protects nothing. This is broken access control, first in the OWASP Top 10, and the check fits in a single query made with a low-privilege account before going live.

When should you use Bubble?

If you need a web app, Bubble is likely the tool for you. With Bubble, you can develop web apps that are comparable to websites and offer you the same visibility with more features. To give you an idea, one of thedifferences between web apps and websites is that a web app is an interactive tool that allows users to perform tasks online, whereas a website is often a collection of web pages that can be viewed online. Web apps typically involve greater user interaction and are more complex than websites. Web apps can be highly beneficial for your business.

One point deserves numbers before starting, because it drives the budget over time. The free plan does not let you connect a custom domain: according to Bubble’s pricing page, the first plan that does is Starter, at $29 per month on annual billing, then Growth at $119 and Team at $349. On top of that comes consumption, measured since 2023 in workload units, page loads, workflows, searches, and billed at $0.30 per 1,000 units beyond the included allowance. Two apps on the same plan can therefore cost very differently depending on how they are built.
